After several weeks of sewing, stressing, unpicking, re-sewing I was finally ready for my first event armed with only six large lace edged handbags and nine small embellished purses.
After waiting for about half an hour for my brother to get out of his Spanish mock exam, almost getting burgled (it turned out we had left the front door open and there was a suspicious looking ladder standing against a our house, we panicked over it for about 15 mins, after which the window cleaners came. it turned out they went for a brew..) , driving to Manchester for the very first time, getting mildly lost, going the wrong way on several one way streets, spending half an hour finding a parking place on/ around Oxford road, spending another half an hour getting INTO the parking place ( including a change of driver) and then another 15 minutes debating on whether we would have to come back and move the car or not seeing as it was after 6.00pm we FINALLY managed to get to the Manchester Metropolitan University student union, the place where Just a Temporary Measure was to become more than just a blog name.
Once people got over their fascination with the buttons, they were actually really impressed with the bags especially the smaller embellished ones. There were a few amusing comments made as well i.e. “did you buy the purses and then put the buttons on??” Although I only sold two purses and received two orders I’m still glad of how the event went as there was a lot of interest in the bags (after all it is nice to know that people other than your friends and family like your work!).
However one issue still remained the name of my “business”. My original intention was to name it after my blog, Just a Temporary Measure. However it was taken from the premise of another business called A Temporary Measure, thoughts of copyright issues and such were firmly placed in my head and I couldn’t get them to bugger off. So I did what my instincts were telling me not to do…I actually contacted the owner of the company…yes I know stupid thing to do right? I mean that’s just like giving them the invitation to obliterate me. Actually it was quite the opposite. After exchanging several extremely pleasantly worded emails with the owner of the company, I resolved to make up my own name, only then would my “business” feel as if it was truly mine, built from scratch. As the owner of A Temporary Measure put it:
“if you appreciate something then the best way to act on it is probably not by taking from it”
And so it was that Buttons and Ribbons was born...
